COPY EDITING

Just some small editing errors I found while on Sidelines. The bold is my correction.

Shots fired, assault reported near TEMPT nightclub

Police then talked with a security guard at TEMPT, who told officers he had confronted a man for a harassing a female patron before the shots rang out.

Police then talked with a security guard at TEMPT, who told officers he had confronted a man for harassing a female patron before the shots rang out.

For this error, there was just an extra “a” before harassing that needed to be taken out for it to read better.

MTSU alum paints mural for Veterans and Military Center

Purcell said the center wanted a mural that was welcoming, familiar, and would not become dated as time progresses.

Purcell said the center wanted a mural that was welcoming, familiar and would not become dated as time progresses.

For this one, I took out the comma after familiar since AP style doesn’t use the serial comma.

A Look at Murfreesboro’s Newest Juice Bar

“We want to be the place where people kind of come to get away from the madness of their day,” Anderson said, mentioning the free wi-fi and large community table as reasons that make the Juice Bar a popular hang-out destination.

“We want to be the place where people kind of come to get away from the madness of their day,” Anderson said, mentioning the free Wi-Fi and large community table as reasons that make the Juice Bar a popular hang-out destination.

The AP stylebook has Wi-Fi written in this style.

Middle Tennessee Anime Convention welcomes anime fans and celebrities

Returning for the sixteenth year, MTAC 16-Bit took over the Sheraton Music City and Embassy Suites Nashville hotels, filling them with Sailor Scouts, Super Saiyans and Pokemon trainers.

Returning for the 16th year, MTAC 16-Bit took over the Sheraton Music City and Embassy Suites Nashville hotels, filling them with Sailor Scouts, Super Saiyans and Pokemon trainers.

I changed sixteenth into the number form, since it is above nine.

‘Rush Hour’ a predictable mess of overused plots and stereotypes | TV Review

In what is seemingly an age of prequels, sequels, and reboots both on the big screen and the TV, it was hardly surprising that Rush Hour would eventually be rebooted due to its success with Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan.

In what is seemingly an age of prequels, sequels and reboots both on the big screen and the TV, it was hardly surprising that Rush Hour would eventually be rebooted due to its success with Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan.

Again, just the issue of AP style not using a serial comma which was after “sequels.”

Kappa Delta hosts 2016 Wing Fling | Photo Gallery

This past Saturday, local businesses and community members participated in Kappa Delta’s “Wing Fling”, which is the sorority’s largest annual philanthropic event.

This past Saturday, local businesses and community members participated in Kappa Delta’s “Wing Fling,” which is the sorority’s largest annual philanthropic event.

For this one, the comma was just right outside the quotation mark.

Op-Ed: The Swipe Left Generation

Let’s face it: our generation is obsessed with the concept of “instant gratification.”

Let’s face it: Our generation is obsessed with the concept of “instant gratification.”

“Our” needed to be capitalized since it is the start of a complete sentence after a colon.

Op-Ed: What makes superhero films so superior?

In 2008, Robert Downey Jr and Marvel shocked the world by making a super-hero flick that catered to a mass audience.

In 2008, Robert Downey Jr. and Marvel shocked the world by making a super-hero flick that catered to a mass audience.

In this one, the error was very small. The only thing was the missing period after Jr.

Hacker group challenges Trump, and why it matters

In this video, a representative of Anonymous announced, “we have been watching you Donald Trump and what we see is deeply disturbing.”

In this video, a representative of Anonymous announced, “We have been watching you Donald Trump and what we see is deeply disturbing.”

The first word of the quotation needed to be capitalized.

Why We Protested: Students Acted Out at Gonzales Speech

Out of ten torture techniques that Gonzales approved in a memo to President Bush, water boarding is one of the most widely known and also one of the most terrible.

Out of ten torture techniques that Gonzales approved in a memo to President Bush, waterboarding is one of the most widely known and also one of the most terrible.

From everywhere I searched, waterboarding was one word.

My experience copyediting for Sidelines

Copyediting for Sidelines, even though for only one hour, was an interesting experience for me and was actually the first time I had ever worked inside the CIM. First off, I think I signed up for a time that wasn’t actually supposed to be there, which seemed to confuse Dylan, the editor I signed in with. After the initial confusion, Dylan logged into her WordPress and had lots of material that needed to be checked. She would give me three stories to look at. At the time, I thought this would easily be done quickly, however, I soon found that to be false. Once I sat down at the computer and started editing, I gained much more respect to those editing at Sidelines. I don’t have a great attention span, but this experience forced me to concentrate a lot harder than I expected to.

My writing in AP style is not the best, so I kept the stylebook open during the hour in there. I actually did not finish editing all of the stories, as I realized how meticulous and thorough you have to be before it should be published. Dylan told me that she would read through a story and have, at the very least, two others check it before it can go online. I sat there and checked each and every single word and looked through the book or online if something caught my attention.

Once the hour finished, I completed about 90 percent of the stories. Like I said, it’s a very meticulous and thorough process. There were probably some errors I let slip through, which is what makes me admire those working in Sidelines more. In the end, I learned how serious newsrooms take to check for errors, and that it’s a team process. Everyone wants to make sure the job is done right.

Here is what I got to edit:

Phillips possibly moving from hardwood to gridiron

MTSU baseball swept by Western Kentucky

SLF 2016: Minton Sparks on the healing power of personal writing
